"Body and mind play an equal role in patient well-being" - Interview with Dr. Stefania Fanfani

October 17, 2023

We interviewed Dr. Stefania Fanfani, Laboratory Manager, partner and owner of the Fanfani Institute.

Why is laboratory diagnostics important?

Laboratory diagnostics has a long and fascinating history that has evolved over the centuries. The earliest forms of laboratory diagnosis date back to 'antiquity when people relied on empirical observations or physical signs to assess the health of patients. It then evolved with the scientific revolution thanks to advances made in chemistry and microscopy until the 20th century, with the introduction of computers, which made possible the automation and standardization of laboratory testing. Our laboratory itself, established in the 1950s, has seen the amazing evolution of increasingly sophisticated methods until today with a totally renovated and state-of-the-art laboratory.

Laboratory diagnostics is a branch of medicine that focuses on the analysis of biological samples that evaluate blood diseases, organ health, the presence of infections or metabolic diseases. It quickly provides useful elements to define and monitor a patient's condition, which is useful in diagnosis.

It puts the physician in a position to know immediately the health status of the organism.

Of course. It provides the physician with important information about the health status of the body and usually in an immediate and comprehensive way. And it is also a useful tool for doing prevention, which is essential for reducing the incidence of disease. When we talk about prevention we need to talk about the primary one , aimed at implementing those actions that aim to prevent the onset of a disease, and this is done through the promotion of healthy lifestyles and healthy behaviors such as carrying out physical activity, a balanced diet, as well as the promotion of emotional health. Primary prevention is followed by secondary prevention, which aims at 'intercepting any diseases that are still silent: for this we are helped by blood check-ups that aim at a general assessment of health status.

How should the relationship with the patient be?

In high-quality health care, caring for the relationship with the patient is a key element. Our father always reminded us, "The patient is at the center, you have to know his needs, both the expressed but especially the unspoken ones," and we and our collaborators have inherited this attention that we give to those who come to our facility. Entering into the patient's psyche, respecting them, showing empathy, welcoming their concerns, caring for communication, clear and transparent, and listening. A positive and supportive relationship between physician and patient is essential to ensure effective care.

A health and wellness tip?

Health is influenced by a combination of physical, emotional and social factors. It is important to take a holistic approach to wellness, which relates good eating habits, caring for one's body but also maintaining one's emotional well-being through satisfying social relationships as well. Indeed, the psyche, in the 'onset of disease, plays a decisive role in maintaining the state of health.
